You can say the same word and make two people hear two different things (think Yanny/Laurel). German speakers can follow a nursery rhyme that baffles English speakers. Language is a funny thing. In this linguistics-themed class, we'll take a look at neat tricks with language and why they work.
C1457: Nonviolent Conflict Resolution in Sprout Spring 15 (Feb. 14 - 28, 2015)
An examination of conflict and resolution. What is violence? How does it play into conflict? Can and should it be used to stop conflict? We'll do some experiential learning and activity-based discussion as well as look at theories. We'll compare ideas from some big thinkers in nonviolence as well as world leaders.

What does it mean to "prove" something? What is the difference between proof and evidence? Can you ever be 100% certain that something is true or false? Is everything true or false? This class will cover philosophy of proofs, identifying valid and invalid proofs, and some techniques of making mathematical and logical arguments.
