Past Classes

(Clicking a class title will bring you to the course's section of the corresponding course catalog)

H961: Life of War: Becoming a Spartan in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
The Spartans earned their reputation as the world's fiercest warriors; from birth, their entire upbringing was geared towards forging soldiers out of men. This lecture will take students through the life and death of a Spartan male, while giving due attention to their mastery of phalanx warfare.

S962: The Physiology of Death in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
When the human body is exposed to extreme physical force, it must cope as best as it can to maintain adequate blood flow to all of its tissues. When the body fails to maintain this equilibrium, or homeostasis, death results.

A963: Balloon Animals! in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
Learn how to make balloon animals!

E964: Organic Chemistry! in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
At the most fundamental of levels, we are all molecules. This class will seek to take a molecular look at life and survey the major principles that govern how these building blocks interact. To do so, we will begin by surveying the unifying themes of organic chemistry (for which there are surprisingly few) before moving on to inspecting the main macromolecules of life- sugars, lipids, and nucleic acids.

S843: Life of War: Becoming a Spartan in Sprout Spring 14 (Feb. 15 - Mar. 01, 2014)
The Spartans earned their reputation as the world's fiercest warriors; from birth, their entire upbringing was geared towards forging soldiers out of men. This lecture will take students through the life and death of a Spartan male, while giving due attention to their mastery of phalanx warfare.

S844: The Science of Illusion in Sprout Spring 14 (Feb. 15 - Mar. 01, 2014)
Have you ever wondered how optical illusions work? If so, sign up! In this class, we'll go over the underlying neuroscience that explains several illusions.

S845: Game Theory in Sprout Spring 14 (Feb. 15 - Mar. 01, 2014)
Learn how to play games as an economist and solve world peace at the same time! Topics include backward induction, Nash equilibria, and many more!

T846: Feeling Lucky? in Sprout Spring 14 (Feb. 15 - Mar. 01, 2014)
Prepare to be surprised with an assortment of random cool topics! Taught by an ensemble of admins. Potential topics include - but are NOT limited to - Calvin and Hobbes trivia, organic chemistry, modern Poetry, Pokemon, and knot theory.

H686: Life of War: Becoming a Spartan in Splash Fall 13 (Nov. 09, 2013)
The Spartans earned their reputation as the world's fiercest warriors; from birth, their entire upbringing was geared towards forging soldiers out of men. This lecture will take students through the life and death of a Spartan male, while giving due attention to their mastery of phalanx warfare.

S687: The Science of Illusion in Splash Fall 13 (Nov. 09, 2013)
Have you ever wondered how optical illusions work? If so, sign up! In this class, we'll go over the underlying neuroscience that explains several illusions.

D460: Life of War: Becoming a Spartan in Splash Summer 13 (Jul. 06 - 27, 2013)
The Spartans earned their reputation as the world's fiercest warriors; from birth, their entire upbringing was geared towards forging soldiers out of men. This lecture will take students through the life and death of a Spartan male, while giving due attention to their mastery of phalanx warfare.

F479: Empires of the Ancient World in Splash Summer 13 (Jul. 06 - 27, 2013)
Join us for a fun four part lecture series surveying the civilizations that have come to define the Ancient Era. Includes discussions of Egyptian Civilization, Spartan Society, The Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire.

From hypnotics and depressants to stimulants and hallucinogens, there are a wide range of psychoactive drugs that fundamentally alter our brain’s chemistry. This course will analyze how these types of drugs disturb the chemical balances within our brains and how we experience these disruptions.

S135: From Quark to Cosmos in Splash Fall 12 (Oct. 20, 2012)
From Quark to Cosmos will take students through a visual tour of our universe by using interactive examples, physical models, and the latest computer animations to convey the scale and true appearance of our universe at every level. After beginning at the subatomic level, the lecture will work its way up through atoms, molecules, cells, organisms, planets, solar systems, galaxies, and finally, the universe.

S92: On the Edge of Collapse: Shock and Trauma in Splash Spring 12 (Mar. 24, 2012)
When the human body is exposed to extreme physical force, it must cope as best as it can to maintain adequate blood flow to all of its tissues. When the body fails to maintain this equilibrium, or homeostasis, it enters into shock. This collapse of the circulatory system, and whether or not it can be reversed, is at the center of whether a trauma victim will live or die. This lecture will go into the nature of shock, its stages, and the techniques emergency medical personnel use to combat it.
