How many atoms are there in the universe? How many gallons of water are there in the Pacific Ocean? How many bytes of data are there on the internet? How many cells are there in the human body? How many piano tuners are there in New York City? Fermi questions seek rough estimates of quantities that are otherwise impossible to measure. In this class, you'll learn how to tackle these seemingly absurd problems!
C1714: Thinking Like a Physicist in Sprout Fall 15 (Oct. 03 17, 2015)
Many students finish their first physics course associating the field with formulas and pluggingandchugging. This isn't true! Physics is a creative process. It's all about using the laws that govern the universe in innovative ways to solve problems. This course will guide you through the process of solving problems in kinematics, focusing on the fact that problems can be solved in multiple ways. Each class, students will get to solve challenging problems together in groups on whiteboards. In addition to creativity, physics is all about collaboration!
