Gay penguins. Napping. Poo. How can these topics help us understand the world around us? In this class we splash into the field of STS (Science and Technology Studies) and take a critical, historical, and ~anthropological~ lens to scientists and institutions of power. This is a class for social justice advocates, aspiring scientists, and just anyone interested in why our world is the way it is and how we might imagine a better one.

Our world has problems. A lot of them, in fact. From racism, sexism, LGBTQI discrimination and ableism, to failing education systems, capitalism, increasing economic inequality and climate change. Too often it feels overwhelming! To make waves in the world we need a shift from individual to systems level thinking. In this class we look at what top researchers have said about strategies of systems-change at all kinds of levels, including takeaways for anyone interested in taking on social change in nonprofit, activist, and social enterprise spaces!

A4018: Character Illustration and Design! in Splash Fall 2019 (Nov. 16, 2019)
Are you interested in drawing, illustration, design or animation? Do you ever find yourself doodling in the corner of your notes? In this class we will design and illustrate our own human (or, not quite human if you prefer) characters! Along the way we will learn about some processes and techniques used by character designers and animators, including Robh Ruppel (from Into the Spider-Verse!) and Marika Cowan (from Our Cartoon President). You don't need to be "good" at drawing to take this, just creative and willing to have a go! :)
