C1246: Epidemics, Pandemics and the Struggle to Control Disease in Sprout Fall 2014 (Oct. 04 - 18, 2014)
Fighting disease outbreaks has been a struggle for much of the history of humankind. In the first session of this class, we will cover what epidemics and pandemics are and what organizations like the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) are doing to combat outbreaks. The second and third sessions will involve an examination of disease outbreaks from both history and modern times.

Parasites, bacteria and viruses - oh my! These microbes are around us all the time, but what happens when they reside within us? During this 4-week course, we will cover the life cycle of specific pathogens and touch on the medical impact that they have. By the end of the course, participants will be able to discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of these microbes! [4-week class]
