Brief Biographical Sketch:

My name is Derek Tsang, and I was born in Flushing, New York. I lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania (yes, from The Office), for 14 years, and now I live in upstate New York. In high school, I was very interested in mathematics and chemistry. At Yale, I plan on being pre-med, and my tentative major is Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Some of my hobbies include tennis, piano, and violin. I am also a huge Houston Rockets and Manchester City fan!

By definition, number theory is the study integers. This may sound simple, but many of the unsolved problems in mathematics are related to number theory. Carl Friedrich Gauss, one of the greatest mathematicians in history, once said, "Mathematics is the queen of the sciences—and number theory is the queen of mathematics." In this class, we hope to give you a glimpse into the fascinating field of number theory.
