Brief Biographical Sketch:

Reuben Hendler is a senior at Yale studying the cognitive science of wellbeing. He uses techniques from psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience to explore how the mind assigns ethical and moral value and produces feelings of meaningfulness and fulfillment, as well as how techniques like meditation can cultivate mental habits conducive to human flourishing. Reuben was introduced to meditation seven years ago in a high school geometry class and has practiced meditation ever since. He has been on retreat in France with Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and at Yale co-founded a student meditation group called YMindful. Reuben works as an undergraduate research assistant for Hedy Kober, PhD, in Yale's Clinical & Affective Neuroscience Laboratory, and he is beginning work through the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. An avid a cappella singer, Reuben took a leave of absence from Yale last year to sing with the Yale Whiffenpoofs.

The class will begin with an exploration of what meditation meant in ancient Buddhism and how it has been adapted in contemporary Western society. It will continue with an investigation of how meditation functions psychologically. The course will conclude with a critical analysis of research and applications of meditation in America over the last fifty years. Both theoretical and experiential approaches will help students develop a multifaceted understanding of meditation by the end of the course.
