C2198: Understanding the Syrian Humanitarian Crisis in Sprout Fall 16 (Oct. 01 - 15, 2016)
This course aims to help high school students make sense of the Syrian refugee crisis and the war in Syria--the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. We will help students more fully appreciate the complexity of the situation and think critically about media portrayals of the war. Students will learn why the situation in Syria is so critical, and why it is highly relevant to the rest of the world. Particular attention will be paid to the role of Western countries, and to contextualizing the negative responses refugees often receive with similar historical events, such as McCarthyism. Current event topics such as the rise of Islamophobia, Brexit, and terrorism may be included. There will be a special emphasis on what high school students can do to raise awareness of the Syrian Humanitarian Crisis and effect small-scale change.
