Brief Biographical Sketch:
Kristi is a teacher and administrator for Splash at Yale. She is pursuing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Yale University. She co-directed the first two Sprout at Yale programs and has been teaching for Splash at Yale since its first program. This class will begin with a brief overview of medical device development and will then cover implantable heart devices (pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators, ventricular assist devices, and artificial hearts) and areas in which the technology may be improved in the future.

E1007: Micro- and Nanotechnology for Biomedicine in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
What are micro- and nanotechnology? How are micro and nano scale devices made and how can they be used in biomedicine? This class will cover different microfabrication techniques for making small scale devices, an introduction to microfluidics, and current/future applications of micro- and nanotechnology for biomedicine.
E1048: Introduction to Biomechanics in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
What is biomechanics and why is it useful? How can we study the mechanics of the human body? This class will discuss some of the basic postulates and equations necessary to understand biomechanics. Some math background will be necessary.
A1050: The Kawasaki Rose in Splash Spring 14 (Mar. 29, 2014)
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a beautiful origami rose? In this class, we will learn how to fold a variation of the origami Kawasaki rose, complete with leaves and a stem. It is a somewhat advanced model, but we will go through all of the steps together and students with and without origami experience are welcome.

T816: Basic Japanese in Sprout Spring 14 (Feb. 15 - Mar. 01, 2014)
This class will offer an introduction to basic Japanese words, phrases, and conversations. Roughly half of the class time will be devoted to speaking practice and the other half will be devoted to writing practice. Students will be asked to complete brief review exercises outside of class.

An overview and discussion of Japanese American Internment in the United States during World War II. How would you have reacted if you were a Japanese American during that time? How did many Japanese Americans actually respond? What can we learn from their experiences?
