Brief Biographical Sketch:

Derrick Afrifa is a New York native and of Ghanaian descent. Afrifa is a student at Sothern Connecticut State University. Mr. Afrifa is currently a member of the Black Student Union, a student liaison for AmeriCorps Vista and the African Student Association. He held the position of president of African Student Association in 2015. One of Afrifa’s passions is global healthcare through Information Technology. He devotes part of his time helping the youth. Mr. Afrifa has mentored youth in the Gear Up program as well a mentor for New Haven’s nonprofit LEAP program. He also sends resources and provides mentorships to a group of young boys in Accra Ghana. Being a mentor to these kids has been enlightening for him it has allowed him to understand how important role models are. Derrick believes that as a mentor and role model it is important that he teaches youth the importance of education and being the best they can be regardless of the circumstances. As a Yale Splash teacher, I had the opportunity inspire eager high school and middle school students by sharing my passions with them. I designed my own class and can teach any topic. I lead workshops where I gave lectures, taught skills, and ran activities. Yale Splash is an opportunity for students to intellectually explore varies topics outside their school's curriculum.
